ss Rotterdam – The Story of a Grande Dame
Launched on 13 September 1958 and christened by Queen Juliana of the Netherlands, ss Rotterdam was built at the Rotterdam Drydock Company as the largest and most advanced passenger ship ever constructed in the Netherlands. She became the flagship of Holland America Line, a proud symbol of Dutch engineering and design.
On 3 September 1959, she departed on her maiden voyage to New York, carrying not only paying passengers but also dignitaries, celebrities, and members of the Dutch royal family. With interiors designed by top Dutch architects, she featured a modern mid-century style that set her apart from the lavish, traditional ocean liners of her time.
For the next four decades, ss Rotterdam operated as both a transatlantic liner and a luxury cruise ship, undertaking world voyages that carried passengers to every corner of the globe. Her reputation for reliability and elegance earned her the nickname La Grande Dame.
By the late 1990s, as newer ships entered service, she made her final Holland America voyage in 1997, closing an illustrious chapter in ocean liner history.

Sailing as Rembrandt
After retiring from Holland America Line in 1997, ss Rotterdam was purchased by Premier Cruises, a company known for acquiring classic liners and giving them a second life. Under Premier, she was renamed Rembrandt and underwent modifications to suit the line’s traditional cruising style.
As Rembrandt, she continued to operate Caribbean and European itineraries, appealing to loyal ocean liner enthusiasts who valued her classic charm over the mega-ships dominating the industry. Her interiors largely retained their mid-century character, allowing passengers to experience a taste of traditional cruising even in the late 1990s.
However, her time under Premier Cruises was short-lived. In September 2000, Premier suddenly ceased operations and declared bankruptcy, leaving the ship laid up in Freeport, Bahamas. For years, she remained idle, her fate uncertain as scrapping seemed the most likely outcome.
Thanks to intervention by preservationists and Dutch heritage groups, the former ss Rotterdam escaped dismantling. Plans were set in motion to repatriate her to the Netherlands, beginning the long and complex process of saving and restoring this maritime icon.
ss Rotterdam: Rebirth as a Floating Hotel

After years of uncertainty, the former ss Rotterdam was purchased by preservation groups determined to save her from the scrapyard. In 2004 she was towed back to the Netherlands, a massive undertaking that symbolised her return home. What followed was an extensive and painstaking restoration, aimed at preserving her heritage while adapting her for a new life as a hotel, museum, and event venue.
Restorers worked to retain her original 1950s and 1960s character – from art deco lounges and teak decks to historic cabins – while integrating modern amenities. After nearly a decade of work, she reopened in 2010, permanently moored in the city of Rotterdam under the care of WestCord Hotels.
Today, ss Rotterdam offers 254 stylish cabins inspired by her original ocean liner décor, multiple restaurants and bars, and immersive tours that allow visitors to explore her bridge, engine room, and heritage decks. Recognised for its cultural and historical significance, she stands as both a monument to the golden age of transatlantic travel and a vibrant destination for travellers seeking something extraordinary.
