Sail Away Releases Landmark Cruise Ship Documentary in Partnership with Ambassador Cruise Line.
In January 2026, Ambience left service for dry dock at A&P Tyne. While resting on her keel blocks, lifeboats were lowered to the quayside. Thrusters were inspected. Propellers polished. Cabins stripped back. Navigation systems upgraded. And deep below the waterline, engineers began work in spaces most passengers will never see.
For sixteen days, Ambience stood exposed.
And Sail Away was there to capture it all.
Narrated by Dr Stephen Payne OBE, the designer of the only ocean liner still in service, Queen Mary 2 – we are proud to release Ambience: The Cruise Ship Worth Saving, a feature-length cruise ship documentary offering unprecedented behind-the-scenes access during one of the most significant dry docks in the ship’s recent history.

A 35-Year-Old Ship With a Future
Launched in 1991 and originally named Regal Princess by former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Ambience has sailed under multiple identities across different parts of the world. She has survived industry shifts, ownership changes and the uncertainty of a global pandemic.
In 2020, she came perilously close to being scrapped.
Instead, Ambassador Cruise Line took a leap of faith and gave her a second life.
This documentary explores what that commitment truly means.
Because preserving a classic cruise ship is not just about fresh carpet or new lighting. It is about investment beneath the surface. Engineering integrity. Regulatory compliance. Passenger safety. And confidence in the future.

Rare Access: Bridge, Engine Room and Dry Dock Floor
During Ambience’s January refit, Sail Away was granted rare access across the ship.
We filmed from the bridge during high-pressure manoeuvres into and out of dry dock. We descended into the engine room with Ambassador’s Chief Operations Officer as boilers, generators and air-conditioning systems were overhauled. We stood beneath her exposed hull as anchors, stabilisers and thruster tunnels were inspected.
Viewers will see:
- Propellers measuring five metres across, polished to improve fuel efficiency
- Bow and stern thrusters inspected and serviced
- Stabiliser systems checked and prepared for sea
- Lifeboat davits maintained and safety systems reviewed
- New navigation systems installed on the bridge
- Extensive cabin and suite refurbishment
- Significant upgrades to air-conditioning infrastructure
- Tank and void space inspections critical to regulatory compliance
The documentary also captures one of the tensest moments of the refit — when, with just hours before departure, technical challenges threatened to delay Ambience’s return to service.
Under pressure, the team delivered.

More Than Maintenance
Dry docks are not glamorous. But they are vital.
A cruise ship of Ambience’s age must pass rigorous inspections, including Passenger Ship Safety Certificate requirements and regular port state control checks. These standards are strict. Failure is not an option.
For Ambassador Cruise Line, this refit was not cosmetic. It was strategic.
Ambience remains the fleet favourite for many loyal guests. Her passenger space ratio offers breathing room rarely found on newer, denser designs. Her Observatory Lounge dome — inspired by original architectural concepts, still provides some of the finest panoramic views at sea.
This documentary asks an important question:
In an industry focused on ever-larger ships, is there still a place for character?

A Major Production for Sail Away
Other than launching our print magazine, this is the most ambitious project Sail Away has undertaken.
The production involved:
- Days of on-location filming
- More than 160 hours of editing
- Extensive research and scripting
- Travel across the United Kingdom
- Complex coordination during operational dry dock conditions
Our aim was simple: to do justice to a ship that nearly disappeared — and to document the work that ensures she sails on.
