Port of Dover, UK, Welcomes Viking Saturn on its First Ever Call

Dover Cruise Port witnessed a significant beginning to the bustling 2024 season as Viking Saturn, an all-veranda ship, made its inaugural call today. Celebrating this new chapter, a traditional plaque exchange ceremony was held on board, marking Viking Saturn as the fourth Viking Ocean ship to operate from Dover this year, joining Neptune, Sky, and Venus. This arrival is set to enhance the Port’s offerings with a total of 21 scheduled visits throughout the year.

This event follows closely on the heels of another Viking ship, Neptune, which made its debut at Dover in May 2023. This prior visit also coincided with Viking’s announcement of an ambitious three-year schedule that promises a total of 60 calls to Dover by 2025, highlighting the cruise line’s commitment to making Dover a central hub in its operations.

Peter Wright, Head of Cruise at the Port of Dover, expressed his delight over the partnership with Viking, noting, “It’s a pleasure to welcome Viking Saturn here to Dover, and to showcase our excellent partnership with Viking on this milestone day for the Port.” He further commented on the growing popularity of Dover as a port of call, attributing much of this allure to the scenic views of the White Cliffs and Dover Castle that greet passengers upon arrival.

Wendy Atkin-Smith, Managing Director of Viking UK, also shared her enthusiasm for Dover’s role in their cruise operations. She described the port’s advantageous location and fascinating history as key factors that draw global attention. Atkin-Smith detailed the variety of shore excursions available to guests, from historical tours in Canterbury to nature walks in Sissinghurst Castle and Gardens, and even vineyard tours at Chapel Down.

The managing director also revealed that Viking’s ocean voyages for 2026 are now open for booking, with itineraries covering the British Isles and Scandinavia, further cementing Dover’s position in their future plans. “We’re looking forward to continuing to call into Dover on our small ocean ships over the next few years,” she added.
