Princess Cruises Delays Launch of Star Princess, Cancels Initial Sailings

Princess Cruises has announced the postponement of the highly anticipated delivery of their new luxury liner, Star Princess, leading to the cancellation of its first nine sailings including the maiden voyage. The vessel, which was originally scheduled to be delivered by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri on 29 July 2025, will now be handed over nearly two months later, on 26th September 2025.

John Padgett, President of Princess Cruises, expressed disappointment over the delay but emphasised the necessity of meeting the company’s high standards. “Despite our collective dedication and relentless pursuit to deliver the ship in late July, it has become evident that additional time is required to ensure the Star Princess is delivered to the highest standards expected by our guests,” Padgett stated.

The revised schedule includes an inaugural roundtrip sailing from Barcelona, beginning with an 11-day Mediterranean voyage on 4 October 2025. This will be followed by a seven-day Mediterranean journey starting on 15 October 2025. The ship will then embark on a 14-day transatlantic crossing to Fort Lauderdale on 22 October 2025, marking the beginning of its first Caribbean season.

In light of the cancellations, Princess Cruises has outlined several options for guests booked on the affected inaugural sailings. Travellers have the opportunity to rebook on any Princess cruise globally, including the new Star Princess, its sister ship Sun Princess, or any other vessel within the fleet. Those opting to rebook will receive additional incentives in the form of future cruise and onboard credits, the value of which will depend on their chosen cruise.

Alternatively, guests can choose to cancel their bookings and receive a full refund of their cruise fare. Additionally, Princess Cruises has committed to protecting travel agent commissions on all fully paid bookings, ensuring that agents are not financially impacted by these changes.

This decision, although unfortunate for eager travellers, underscores Princess Cruises’ commitment to quality and guest satisfaction, ensuring that Star Princess meets the exemplary standards expected by its passengers upon delivery.
